Mangalore News: The Mangaluru Municipal Corporation (MCC) meeting on Saturday created a ruckus after Congress members objected to the proposal to name the Surathkal intersection after Hindutva ideologue Savarkar. Congress councilor Naveen D’Souza objected as soon as the meeting began, saying that there was no discussion on the proposal before it was included in the agenda.
He said that the corporation should give priority to development works instead of renaming the traffic intersection. After this, Congress councilors walked in the middle of the hall raising slogans against Savarkar. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief whip Premanand Shetty said the resolution was accepted in the last meeting and it was not appropriate to raise an issue after the order was passed.
Congress members shouted slogans
Congress members continued to raise slogans while BJP members raised slogans praising Savarkar, creating a noisy atmosphere in the meeting hall. Mayor Jayanand Anchan adjourned the meeting for some time. When the meeting resumed, the Mayor said that the proposal was being accepted after registering the objections of all the opposition members.
Controversy has already happened
This controversy over Mangaluru Municipal Corporation keeping a square in the name of Savarkar is not the first controversy of this year. Even before this there has been controversy about this. In August this year also, some unidentified people had put up posters to name a square in Mangaluru after Savarkar. However, later those posters were removed by the police when the controversy over it escalated.
